TABQAWORLD: Optimizing Multimodal Reasoning for Multi-Turn Table Question Answering

arXiv:2604.03393v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Multimodal reasoning has emerged as a powerful framework for enhancing reasoning capabilities of reasoning models. While multi-turn table reasoning methods have improved reasoning accuracy through tool use and reward modeling, they rely on fixed text serialization for table state readouts. This introduces representation errors in table encoding that significantly accumulate over multiple turns. Such accumulation is alleviated by tabular grounding methods in the expense of inference compute and cost, rendering real world deployment impractical. To address this, we introduce TABQAWORLD, a table reasoning framework that jointly optimizes tabular action through representation and estimation. For representation, TABQAWORLD employs an action-conditioned multimodal selection policy, which dynamically switches between visual and textual representations to maximize table state readout reliability. For estimation, TABQAWORLD optimizes stepwise reasoning trajectory through table metadata including dimension, data types and key values, safely planning trajectory and compressing low-complexity actions to reduce conversation turns and latency. Designed as a training-free framework, empirical evaluations show that TABQAWORLD achieves state-of-the-art performance with 4.87% accuracy improvements over baselines, with 5.42% accuracy gain and 33.35% inference latency reduction over static settings, establishing a new standard for reliable and efficient table reasoning.

Grounded Token Initialization for New Vocabulary in LMs for Generative Recommendation

arXiv:2604.02324v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Language models (LMs) are increasingly extended with new learnable vocabulary tokens for domain-specific tasks, such as Semantic-ID tokens in generative recommendation. The standard practice initializes these new tokens as the mean of existing vocabulary embeddings, then relies on supervised fine-tuning to learn their representations. We present a systematic analysis of this strategy: through spectral and geometric diagnostics, we show that mean initialization collapses all new tokens into a degenerate subspace, erasing inter-token distinctions that subsequent fine-tuning struggles to fully recover. These findings suggest that \emph{token initialization} is a key bottleneck when extending LMs with new vocabularies. Motivated by this diagnosis, we propose the \emph{Grounded Token Initialization Hypothesis}: linguistically grounding novel tokens in the pretrained embedding space before fine-tuning better enables the model to leverage its general-purpose knowledge for novel-token domains. We operationalize this hypothesis as GTI (Grounded Token Initialization), a lightweight grounding stage that, prior to fine-tuning, maps new tokens to distinct, semantically meaningful locations in the pretrained embedding space using only paired linguistic supervision. Despite its simplicity, GTI outperforms both mean initialization and existing auxiliary-task adaptation methods in the majority of evaluation settings across multiple generative recommendation benchmarks, including industry-scale and public datasets. Further analyses show that grounded embeddings produce richer inter-token structure that persists through fine-tuning, corroborating the hypothesis that initialization quality is a key bottleneck in vocabulary extension.

AI Co-Scientist for Ranking: Discovering Novel Search Ranking Models alongside LLM-based AI Agents with Cloud Computing Access

arXiv:2603.22376v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Recent advances in AI agents for software engineering and scientific discovery have demonstrated remarkable capabilities, yet their application to developing novel ranking models in commercial search engines remains unexplored. In this paper, we present an AI Co-Scientist framework that automates the full search ranking research pipeline: from idea generation to code implementation and GPU training job scheduling with expert in the loop. Our approach strategically employs single-LLM agents for routine tasks while leveraging multi-LLM consensus agents (GPT 5.2, Gemini Pro 3, and Claude Opus 4.5) for challenging phases such as results analysis and idea generation. To our knowledge, this is the first study in the ranking community to utilize an AI Co-Scientist framework for algorithmic research. We demonstrate that this framework discovered a novel technique for handling sequence features, with all model enhancements produced automatically, yielding substantial offline performance improvements. Our findings suggest that AI systems can discover ranking architectures comparable to those developed by human experts while significantly reducing routine research workloads.

Targeting the OXNAD1-PTGS2 axis with resveratrol overcomes ferroptosis Inhibition and reverses 5-FU resistance in gastric cancer

Gastric Cancer. 2026 Mar 13. doi: 10.1007/s10120-026-01718-x. Online ahead of print.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) remains a cornerstone of first-line chemotherapy for gastric cancer, yet the emergence of resistance severely compromises its clinical efficacy. Although ferroptosis suppression has been recognized as a pivotal mechanism of chemoresistance, the mitochondrial regulatory processes involved remain poorly understood.

METHODS: We integrated clinical specimen analysis, in vitro and in vivo functional assays, multi-omics profiling, and molecular docking to delineate the role of the mitochondrial oxidoreductase OXNAD1 in mediating 5-FU resistance in gastric cancer, and to assess the therapeutic potential of the natural polyphenol resveratrol as a chemosensitizing agent.

RESULTS: OXNAD1 was found to be significantly overexpressed in gastric cancer tissues and cell lines, correlating with unfavorable prognosis and enhanced 5-FU resistance. Mechanistically, OXNAD1 directly bound to and suppressed the ferroptosis driver PTGS2, thereby attenuating lipid peroxidation and mitochondrial damage, ultimately restraining ferroptosis and promoting drug resistance. Notably, resveratrol disrupted the OXNAD1-PTGS2 interaction by directly binding OXNAD1, reinstating ferroptotic activity, markedly enhancing the cytotoxic effect of 5-FU in resistant cells, and potentiating the antitumor efficacy of 5-FU in xenograft models.

CONCLUSION: The OXNAD1-PTGS2 axis constitutes a critical metabolic-cell death cross-regulatory pathway underlying 5-FU resistance in gastric cancer. Targeting this axis with resveratrol provides a promising combinatorial strategy to overcome chemoresistance.

CoCo: Code as CoT for Text-to-Image Preview and Rare Concept Generation

arXiv:2603.08652v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Recent advancements in Unified Multimodal Models (UMMs) have significantly advanced text-to-image (T2I) generation, particularly through the integration of Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning. However, existing CoT-based T2I methods largely rely on abstract natural-language planning, which lacks the precision required for complex spatial layouts, structured visual elements, and dense textual content. In this work, we propose CoCo (Code-as-CoT), a code-driven reasoning framework that represents the reasoning process as executable code, enabling explicit and verifiable intermediate planning for image generation. Given a text prompt, CoCo first generates executable code that specifies the structural layout of the scene, which is then executed in a sandboxed environment to render a deterministic draft image. The model subsequently refines this draft through fine-grained image editing to produce the final high-fidelity result. To support this training paradigm, we construct CoCo-10K, a curated dataset containing structured draft-final image pairs designed to teach both structured draft construction and corrective visual refinement. Empirical evaluations on StructT2IBench, OneIG-Bench, and LongText-Bench show that CoCo achieves improvements of +68.83%, +54.8%, and +41.23% over direct generation, while also outperforming other generation methods empowered by CoT. These results demonstrate that executable code is an effective and reliable reasoning paradigm for precise, controllable, and structured text-to-image generation. Language in the Flow of Time: Time-Series-Paired Texts Weaved into a Unified Temporal Narrative

arXiv:2502.08942v3 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: While many advances in time series models focus exclusively on numerical data, research on multimodal time series, particularly those involving contextual textual information, remains in its infancy. With recent progress in large language models and time series learning, we revisit the integration of paired texts with time series through the Platonic Representation Hypothesis, which posits that representations of different modalities converge to shared spaces. In this context, we identify that time-series-paired texts may naturally exhibit periodic properties that closely mirror those of the original time series. Building on this insight, we propose a novel framework, Texts as Time Series (TaTS), which considers the time-series-paired texts to be auxiliary variables of the time series. TaTS can be plugged into any existing numerical-only time series models and effectively enable them to handle time series data with paired texts. Through extensive experiments on both multimodal time series forecasting and imputation tasks across benchmark datasets with various existing time series models, we demonstrate that TaTS can enhance multimodal predictive performance without modifying model architectures. Our Code is available at https://github.com/iDEA-iSAIL-Lab-UIUC/TaTS.

NutriOrion: A Hierarchical Multi-Agent Framework for Personalized Nutrition Intervention Grounded in Clinical Guidelines

arXiv:2602.18650v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Personalized nutrition intervention for patients with multimorbidity is critical for improving health outcomes, yet remains challenging because it requires the simultaneous integration of heterogeneous clinical conditions, medications, and dietary guidelines. Single-agent large language models (LLMs) often suffer from context overload and attention dilution when processing such high-dimensional patient profiles. We introduce NutriOrion, a hierarchical multi-agent framework with a parallel-then-sequential reasoning topology. NutriOrion decomposes nutrition planning into specialized domain agents with isolated contexts to mitigate anchoring bias, followed by a conditional refinement stage. The framework includes a multi-objective prioritization algorithm to resolve conflicting dietary requirements and a safety constraint mechanism that injects pharmacological contraindications as hard negative constraints during synthesis, ensuring clinical validity by construction rather than post-hoc filtering. For clinical interoperability, NutriOrion maps synthesized insights into the ADIME standard and FHIR R4 resources. Evaluated on 330 stroke patients with multimorbidity, NutriOrion outperforms multiple baselines, including GPT-4.1 and alternative multi-agent architectures. It achieves a 12.1 percent drug-food interaction violation rate, demonstrates strong personalization with negative correlations (-0.26 to -0.35) between patient biomarkers and recommended risk nutrients, and yields clinically meaningful dietary improvements, including a 167 percent increase in fiber and a 27 percent increase in potassium, alongside reductions in sodium (9 percent) and sugars (12 percent).

Step 3.5 Flash: Open Frontier-Level Intelligence with 11B Active Parameters

arXiv:2602.10604v2 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: We introduce Step 3.5 Flash, a sparse Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) model that bridges frontier-level agentic intelligence and computational efficiency. We focus on what matters most when building agents: sharp reasoning and fast, reliable execution. Step 3.5 Flash pairs a 196B-parameter foundation with 11B active parameters for efficient inference. It is optimized with interleaved 3:1 sliding-window/full attention and Multi-Token Prediction (MTP-3) to reduce the latency and cost of multi-round agentic interactions. To reach frontier-level intelligence, we design a scalable reinforcement learning framework that combines verifiable signals with preference feedback, while remaining stable under large-scale off-policy training, enabling consistent self-improvement across mathematics, code, and tool use. Step 3.5 Flash demonstrates strong performance across agent, coding, and math tasks, achieving 85.4% on IMO-AnswerBench, 86.4% on LiveCodeBench-v6 (2024.08-2025.05), 88.2% on tau2-Bench, 69.0% on BrowseComp (with context management), and 51.0% on Terminal-Bench 2.0, comparable to frontier models such as GPT-5.2 xHigh and Gemini 3.0 Pro. By redefining the efficiency frontier, Step 3.5 Flash provides a high-density foundation for deploying sophisticated agents in real-world industrial environments.
