Continuous Learning of Gravity Field Irregularities Around Small Bodies via Neural Hamiltonian ODEs

arXiv:2609.12022v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: We propose to learn the unknown dynamics in the proximity of a small body directly from tracking data, representing them as a feed-forward neural network embedded in the system Hamiltonian. The equations of motion form a Neural Hamiltonian Ordinary Differential Equation, whose variational equations provide exact training gradients: estimation uses position and velocity arcs at realistic noise levels, without acceleration or potential labels, and a continual learning approach warm-starts the network as new data are acquired. The known part of the Hamiltonian carries whatever is available, from the central term and spin state to the constant-density model of the imaged shape. We assess the method against a normalized spherical harmonics expansion estimated from identical arcs through the same machinery, on scenarios built on the shapes of Itokawa, 67P, Bennu and Eros. The network remains usable inside the Brillouin sphere: it plans ballistic descents at Itokawa to \SI{4.6}{m} median touchdown error from tracking alone, against 5.1--\SI{48.9}{m} for harmonics of degree 4--12, and to \SI{0.9}{m} with the imaged shape as prior, a configuration that also recovers localised density anomalies invisible to any harmonics degree. The two representations are complementary, and we discuss their combined use across the phases of a small-body mission.

Ca2+ transient detection and segmentation with the Astronomically motivated algorithm for Background Estimation And Transient Segmentation (Astro-BEATS)

arXiv:2603.22311v1 Announce Type: new Abstract: Fluorescence-based Ca$^{2+}$-imaging is a powerful tool for studying localized neuronal activity, including miniature Synaptic Calcium Transients, providing real-time insights into synaptic activity. These transients induce only subtle changes in the fluorescence signal, often barely above baseline, which poses a significant challenge for automated synaptic transient detection and segmentation. Detecting astronomical transients similarly requires efficient algorithms that will remain robust over a large field of view with varying noise properties. We leverage techniques used in astronomical transient detection for miniature Synaptic Calcium Transient detection in fluorescence microscopy. We present Astro-BEATS, an automatic miniature Synaptic Calcium Transient segmentation algorithm that incorporates image estimation and source-finding techniques used in astronomy and designed for Ca$^{2+}$-imaging videos. Astro-BEATS outperforms current threshold-based approaches for synaptic Ca$^{2+}$ transient detection and segmentation. The produced segmentation masks can be used to train a supervised deep learning algorithm for improved synaptic Ca$^{2+}$ transient detection in Ca$^{2+}$-imaging data. The speed of Astro-BEATS and its applicability to previously unseen datasets without re-optimization makes it particularly useful for generating training datasets for deep learning-based approaches.

Clustering Astronomical Orbital Synthetic Data Using Advanced Feature Extraction and Dimensionality Reduction Techniques

arXiv:2603.13177v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: The dynamics of Saturn's satellite system offer a rich framework for studying orbital stability and resonance interactions. Traditional methods for analysing such systems, including Fourier analysis and stability metrics, struggle with the scale and complexity of modern datasets. This study introduces a machine learning-based pipeline for clustering approximately 22,300 simulated satellite orbits, addressing these challenges with advanced feature extraction and dimensionality reduction techniques. The key to this approach is using MiniRocket, which efficiently transforms 400 timesteps into a 9,996-dimensional feature space, capturing intricate temporal patterns. Additional automated feature extraction and dimensionality reduction techniques refine the data, enabling robust clustering analysis. This pipeline reveals stability regions, resonance structures, and other key behaviours in Saturn's satellite system, providing new insights into their long-term dynamical evolution. By integrating computational tools with traditional celestial mechanics techniques, this study offers a scalable and interpretable methodology for analysing large-scale orbital datasets and advancing the exploration of planetary dynamics.

Enhancing low energy reconstruction and classification in KM3NeT/ORCA with transformers

arXiv:2511.18999v2 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: The current KM3NeT/ORCA neutrino telescope, still under construction, has not yet reached its full potential in neutrino reconstruction capability. When training any deep learning model, no explicit information about the physics or the detector is provided, thus they remain unknown to the model. This study leverages the strengths of transformers by incorporating attention masks inspired by the physics and detector design, making the model understand both the telescope design and the neutrino physics measured on it. The study also shows the efficacy of transformers on retaining valuable information between detectors when doing fine-tuning from one configurations to another.
