WAter: A Workload-Adaptive Knob Tuning System based on Workload Compression

arXiv:2603.28809v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Selecting appropriate values for the configurable parameters of Database Management Systems (DBMS) to improve performance is a significant challenge. Recent machine learning (ML)-based tuning systems have shown strong potential, but their practical adoption is often limited by the high tuning cost. This cost arises from two main factors: (1) the system needs to evaluate a large number of configurations to identify a satisfactory one, and (2) for each configuration, the system must execute the entire target workload on the DBMS, which is both time-consuming. Existing studies have primarily addressed the first factor by improving sample efficiency, that is, by reducing the number of configurations evaluated. However, the second factor, improving runtime efficiency by reducing the time required for each evaluation, has received limited attention and remains an underexplored direction. We develop WAter, a runtime-efficient and workload-adaptive tuning system that finds near-optimal configurations at a fraction of the tuning cost compared with state-of-the-art methods. We divide the tuning process into multiple time slices and evaluate only a small subset of queries from the workload in each slice. Different subsets are evaluated across slices, and a runtime profile is used to dynamically identify more representative subsets for evaluation in subsequent slices. At the end of each time slice, the most promising configurations are evaluated on the original workload to measure their actual performance. Evaluations demonstrate that WAter identifies the best-performing configurations with up to 73.5% less tuning time and achieves up to 16.2% higher performance than the best-performing alternative.

Reducing Complexity for Quantum Approaches in Train Load Optimization

arXiv:2603.29543v1 Announce Type: cross Abstract: Efficiently planning container loads onto trains is a computationally challenging combinatorial optimization problem, central to logistics and supply chain management. A primary source of this complexity arises from the need to model and reduce rehandle operations-unproductive crane moves required to access blocked containers. Conventional mathematical formulations address this by introducing explicit binary variables and a web of logical constraints for each potential rehandle, resulting in large-scale models that are difficult to solve. This paper presents a fundamental departure from this paradigm. We introduce an innovative and compact mathematical formulation for the Train Load Optimization (TLO) problem where the rehandle cost is calculated implicitly within the objective function. This novel approach helps prevent the need for dedicated rehandle variables and their associated constraints, leading to a dramatic reduction in model size. We provide a formal comparison against a conventional model to analytically demonstrate the significant reduction in the number of variables and constraints. The efficacy of our compact formulation is assessed through a simulated annealing metaheuristic, which finds high-quality loading plans for various problem instances. The results confirm that our model is not only more parsimonious but also practically effective, offering a scalable and powerful tool for modern rail logistics.

InCoder-32B: Code Foundation Model for Industrial Scenarios

arXiv:2603.16790v3 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: Recent code large language models have achieved remarkable progress on general programming tasks. Nevertheless, their performance degrades significantly in industrial scenarios that require reasoning about hardware semantics, specialized language constructs, and strict resource constraints. To address these challenges, we introduce InCoder-32B (Industrial-Coder-32B), the first 32B-parameter code foundation model unifying code intelligence across chip design, GPU kernel optimization, embedded systems, compiler optimization, and 3D modeling. By adopting an efficient architecture, we train InCoder-32B from scratch with general code pre-training, curated industrial code annealing, mid-training that progressively extends context from 8K to 128K tokens with synthetic industrial reasoning data, and post-training with execution-grounded verification. We conduct extensive evaluation on 14 mainstream general code benchmarks and 9 industrial benchmarks spanning 4 specialized domains. Results show InCoder-32B achieves highly competitive performance on general tasks while establishing strong open-source baselines across industrial domains.

Androgen activity in the male embryonic hindbrain drives lethal PFA ependymoma

Nature, Published online: 25 March 2026; doi:10.1038/s41586-026-10264-6

Androgen activity in the male embryonic hindbrain prolongs hindbrain differentiation in male individuals and drives sex differences in the incidence and prognosis of posterior fossa type A (PFA) ependymoma, an aggressive childhood brain tumour.

Effect of a Digital-Driven Physician-Pharmacist Collaborative Model for Diabetes in Primary Health Care: Cluster Randomized Trial

Background: Evidence-based physician-pharmacist collaborative clinics have demonstrated significant short-term benefits for patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D), but their long-term effectiveness remains unclear, especially in primary health care settings. Objective: This study aimed to explore the long-term effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a novel, digital-driven, multifaceted physician-pharmacist collaborative model for managing patients with T2D in underresourced settings. Methods: We conducted a 12-month cluster randomized controlled trial from May 2021 to December 2022 across 6 primary health care settings in China. Guided by the theory of planned behavior, the intervention involved routine therapy from physicians along with pharmaceutical interventions from pharmacists. These were delivered through a combination of face-to-face visits and mobile health care. The intervention group received 4 face-to-face visits and biweekly remote education sessions over the 12 months. We conducted intention-to-treat analyses to estimate differences in clinical and behavior indicators between the intervention and control groups. Primary outcomes included glycosylated hemoglobin and 10-year atherosclerotic cardiovascular risk. Data were analyzed using adjusted generalized estimation equations. Results: This study included 574 patients (291 in the intervention group and 283 in the control group). Over 12 months, patients in the intervention group had significant reductions in hemoglobin A1c (–2.57 vs –1.96, respectively; P<.001; 95% CI –1.027 to –0.238) and 10-year atherosclerotic cardiovascular risk (–1.35 vs 0.01, respectively; P<.001; 95% CI –1.690 to –0.630) compared with the control group. Substantial improvements were also observed in several secondary outcomes, including fasting blood glucose, 2-hour postprandial blood glucose, waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, blood pressure, triglyceride, and total cholesterol. Total diabetes-related costs decreased, and patient satisfaction improved significantly in the intervention group. There were no significant differences in BMI, high-density lipoprotein, or low-density lipoprotein. Conclusions: These findings suggest that the physician-pharmacist collaborative model could improve the long-term quality and efficiency of T2D management and reduce medical costs in underresourced areas globally. Patients with T2D, especially those with central obesity or high cardiovascular risk, may benefit more from collaborative clinics. Kaleido: Open-Sourced Multi-Subject Reference Video Generation Model

arXiv:2510.18573v2 Announce Type: replace-cross Abstract: We present Kaleido, a subject-to-video~(S2V) generation framework, which aims to synthesize subject-consistent videos conditioned on multiple reference images of target subjects. Despite recent progress in S2V generation models, existing approaches remain inadequate at maintaining multi-subject consistency and at handling background disentanglement, often resulting in lower reference fidelity and semantic drift under multi-image conditioning. These shortcomings can be attributed to several factors. Primarily, the training dataset suffers from a lack of diversity and high-quality samples, as well as cross-paired data, i.e., paired samples whose components originate from different instances. In addition, the current mechanism for integrating multiple reference images is suboptimal, potentially resulting in the confusion of multiple subjects. To overcome these limitations, we propose a dedicated data construction pipeline, incorporating low-quality sample filtering and diverse data synthesis, to produce consistency-preserving training data. Moreover, we introduce Reference Rotary Positional Encoding (R-RoPE) to process reference images, enabling stable and precise multi-image integration. Extensive experiments across numerous benchmarks demonstrate that Kaleido significantly outperforms previous methods in consistency, fidelity, and generalization, marking an advance in S2V generation.
